Build Your Blog And Then Monetize It For Income

Disclosure: I am compensated for purchases/sign-ups made via the referral and affiliate links in this post. See Disclosures

I am going to show you simple steps to  help you build your blog  by giving you some ideas so you can start making money. The first goal I want from my blog is to show my followers how to make wonderful organic and natural creations in their own home that are easy, healthy and inexpensive. My second goal I want from my blog, is to be able to work from home and produce a comfortable income. Don’t we all! Even if you are creating a blog just to be creative, share your thoughts and tell of your talents, why not monetize it also with a few simple clicks?

I recently had a comment on one of my blog posts that asked if I could make my blogs longer in length. On some of the blogs I may extend them depending on the information I am giving, but I am going to assume that my blog followers and visitors to my site are just like me. They lead a very busy life and want information that is easy for them to do at home in their free time and they want something to be inexpensive. If you read my blog I’m Cheap! How I Live A Frugal Life And Stay Happy you will know I am very busy and I am also cheap. When I read an article online, I don’t want it to drag on and on, or I will just stop reading it eventually. I want it to get straight to the point  “this is how I make it, this is where I get it” and it better be easy and inexpensive or it probably won’t get done in my home. We are also in a full remodeling of our home we recently purchased and you can read about the total chaos here Remodeling Begins On The Homestead! Part 1. So time is very precious to me since I also work part-time outside of the home.

Build your blog today, create your personal goals and set rules and boundaries for yourself. You will find your niche and what you are comfortable writing about quickly. As soon as your fingers touch the keyboard, you will share your knowledge of what you know, what you want your blog followers to learn from you, and you will make it come alive on the pages!

What you need first:
  1. A host site
  2. A domain Name
  3. Finding your niche. Who will be your followers?
  4. Social Media Strategies: How to bring visitors to your new blog
  5.  How to monetize your blog

A host site:

I highly recommend Bluehost. It just doesn’t get any easier that making your host site with Bluehost. I chose Bluehost because they were easy to start and inexpensive. They have the best of everything and they make sure you are satisfied with their product. Plus they pay you for any referrals you send their way and that is why we will build your blog today and start making money! I call that a win win situation! Also, if you sign up with Bluehost, you get a free WordPress site! WordPress is the building block of your blog and free is always good in my book! And you will get a free domain

You will be spending a majority of your time in WordPress and discovering all the creative settings you can use. It took me several days to finally be able to figure out where I wanted to be in WordPress. It can be intimidating at first when you just start WordPress, but I played around and explored all the options offered to me and finally found my comfort zone. I quickly learned how to use the UNDO button! Building your website can be intimidating at first and also very scary and frustrating and filled with words you have never heard of (Plugins and Widgets. Really!?  You can read my post Blog Building Blues to get a basic idea of some of my frustrations.

I YouTubed, googled, and scoured the Internet for help with understanding WordPress and how to best set up my website. I found several websites that I kept going back to for guidance and clarification; WordPress.org and wpbeginner.com and here. I found myself continuously going to the Glossary sections so I could better understand the terms of WordPress.  Both were extremely helpful to me and of course, You Tube just rocks when looking for information and how to’s.!

There will be many days where you are not happy with your site, appearance or article and you will change everything and edit and re-edit again. I am constantly changing and updating on my blog and finding ways to build it better. It takes time. Be patient. This isn’t going to happen overnight. Have fun while exploring your new site and new appearance of the blog.

Create Your Domain Name:

Once you sign up for Bluehost, they will ask you for a domain name, which will be the name of your website that you will eventually direct visitors to go.  A great place to check if you have an available domain name is bustaname.com. It’s free, simple and fun to play around with. Just type in words that you would like your domain name to be, and bust a name will show you several different ways you can set up your domain name. You can also check for a domain name  on Bluehost  domain checker below.

Finding your niche. Who will be your followers?

What is your passion? Do you have ideas in your head that you are bursting at the seams to tell others about? Why not write it down and start sharing with others? Have you created something that you know others will want to purchase and use themselves? Tell us about your creation in words on your very own blog!

Some writers prefer conversational writing where they are more personable and get to know their readers well, while others prefer academic writing where their blog is used mainly as a step by step teaching tool. I use more of a conversation writing style, simply because I love to talk, chat and meet people. I want to know what my readers want and I want to interact with them.

Why is finding your niche so important?

It boils down to keeping your followers, earning their trust, and sharing ideas and creations with like minded readers. It also boils down to money. If you add trusted affiliates on products you have tried and tested and tell your followers about how well the product worked for you, more than likely your followers will want to try that product also and will click on your affiliate link.

If you have an idea, a product or a story you are passionate about, it will come alive on the pages of your blog. Your readers will know you are passionate and experienced in this topic and will want to come back and read more of your posts. Showing flexibility in your writing styles and discussing topics readers are interested in will help bring in added income to your blog and draw you a larger audience.

My main niche is homemade, organic and natural living on a homestead, but I also add extra posts such as monetizing blogs and using affiliates links to tell my readers how to avoid the mistakes I have made, and here is the way you can do it that is much easier. These posts will also draw a larger crowd to my site, including my regular followers.

Social Media Strategies: How to bring visitors to your new blog

Social media is the BEST tool to bring visitors to your blog post! You need to advertise your skills and tell people that you have a blog website that is up and running and ready for a multitude of readers to gain the knowledge you are sharing right?

Add your Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to your blog and any other social media outlets you may use. Then add your blog posts and website to all those media outlets you use and tell people “Hey! Come check out my new blog! I have some awesome ideas to tell you about!” Below you can see some of my social media that I use:

Facebook

Twitter

StumbleUpon

Pinterest

These are just a few samples of where you can start with social media. There are a multitude of social media outlets that you can try out to see where the majority of your niche are hanging out. Try Instagram and the new MeWe that looks like it will be a fun and popular site. I haven’t posted anything at MeWe yet and I am still getting the feel of the website, but I see some of my favorite bloggers are already on the site and posting.

Giving your readers a free item such as free printables or giveaways is just a nice added touch to tell them thank you for visiting your site and please come again and see what else is new. You don’t have to be artistic and start trying to create your own printables, you can share other bloggers printables with your readers and it’s a nice way to send some followers to your fellow bloggers.

How to monetize your blog : Lets Talk $$$cash

So now you have your website set up just how you want it. You have written down brilliant ideas to share with your followers and have posted several articles to keep your readers coming back. You have announced to social media that you are open for business, now what? How about making some extra money for doing what you absolutely love to do?

I recently wrote a post Why Add Affiliates To Your Blog For Income? because I wanted my readers to know how easy it was with just a few simple clicks you are able to share the brands you trust and love and that you can also generate an income when your followers purchase one of those brands.

The amount of time and resources you commit to your blog and how to monetize it will determine your success. Some very famous bloggers state that it took them 6 months to a year of blogging and building their website before they made a dime. So keep plugging away and perfecting your site and articles and add your income makers into your sidebar and footers.

If you choose Bluehost as your host site, you should join their affiliate program from the start.  Bluehost pays you $65 for each referral that you send them that signs up. A win win situation for you with a simple click of the mouse!

Google Adsense is simple to set up and 100% FREE! I only place 2 banner from Google AdSense on my site; one in the sidebar and one in the footer. I feel that is more than adequate. When visitors click on your banner, you get paid a small amount. More visitors, more clicks, more $$$!

I use ShareASale for most of my affiliates. Visit my Trusted Sponsors and my favorite products under Amazon Favorites to see how I categorize my affiliates and sponsors. Just mouse over Trusted Sponsors and you will see subpages that I added for my affiliates. One of the first affiliates you should join is Amazon affiliates. Sign up is simple and easy if you are already signed up with Amazon.

Other affiliate programs include Link Share and Commission Junction. I love ShareASale and how easy it is to use, so I will stay with them.

Advertising and selling your own product has never been easier since you now have your own website and are now on multiple media outlets which is free advertising for you! I am currently working on an EBook and plan to sell and advertise it via my blog when it’s completed.

If you sell products on Etsy, why not add a link and banner on your blog site to show your followers where to go? Sell on Ebay? Same thing applies. Link your items on your blog and tell your visitors about the wonderful things you have to offer. The same goes for Amazon and so on. The skies the limit and now you have the power of sharing, showing and telling your visitors what you have been bursting at the seams to say! So be patient, explore, have fun and create to your hearts content!

I always add my referral code for Grove.com formerly called Epantry. It is a site I use frequently and trust and has paid off very well for me.  Each person I refer to Grove.com I get $10 in free products. That quickly adds up! Plus, I love their all natural, amazing products. if I can’t make it myself, I Grove it!

I’m Cheap! How I Live A Frugal Life And Stay Happy

I’m Cheap! How I Live A Frugal Life And Stay Happy

Disclosure: I am compensated for purchases/sign-ups made via the referral links in this post.

I will be the first to admit..I am a cheapskate. I live frugally. I constantly search for bargains, and I am very good at making my own everyday organic, all natural, healthy product for less than half the cost of store bought. I am very happy and have everything I need. I love thrift stores and diligently search out yard sales for that “prize” item. I wear my cheapness and frugality like a badge of honor! You can live a cheap frugal life too!

When I go shopping and see something I want or am interested in I always ask myself:

  1. Do I need this?
  2. How can I make this myself for CHEAP?
  3. Do I have a coupon for this?
  4. Can I find this cheaper at another store or online?

We are not big spenders. We rarely go out to eat and prefer to cook homemade meals at home. If we buy something on our credit cards, it gets paid off very quickly. My husband is retired and I work from home now so we save HUGE on our gas bill now compared to when I was traveling long distances for work. Over all we just don’t need a lot of “stuff.”

Being Cheap Or Frugal?

Some people say that there is a big difference between being cheap and being frugal. I don’t think that way. If I am in the store and I see an item I want and need and it is marked down say $4 or $5 off the original price or more. I consider that cheap. I buy it. I praise myself for being frugal! I simply put cheap and frugal in the same category. I understand there can be a fine line between being cheap or being frugal. When I say I am cheap, I mean in a grocery hunting, yard sale finding kind of way. I am still a generous person. Being cheap and frugal simply means you are making wise decisions and being resourceful with your hard earned money. Everyone wants to find a good deal, a special buy, a cheap priced item that is high quality.

I will tell you a secret about how cheap I actually am (or frugal for those of you who do not care for the Cheap term). I am a member of Swagbucks. I have been a member of Swagbucks for many years now. On Swagbucks you earn points for searching the Internet, which I do ALOT of, watching videos, shopping ect. I put all those points I earn usually towards an Amazon gift card. Sometimes it is a $25 gift card sometimes a $50 or more gift card. I buy only the Subscribe and Save items on Amazon (FREE SHIPPING!), place my order, and every month receive a box full of FREE products. Once my order has arrived, I cancel my previous Subscribe and Save items and start over the next month with a new gift card that I earned on Swagbucks. Now that is cheap! Free is cheap and I love being cheap! I love Amazon. I love Swagbucks and I love searching the Internet. It is a win win situation for me all the way around! Something that will be very easy for you to do also. Ibotta is FREE to join. Swagbucks is FREE to join. FREE equals CHEAP and that makes me very happy!

Other great ways to be cheap, is to scour Craigslist’s adds or your local Buy, Sell, and Trade posts on Facebook. In my area alone on Facebook are three local Buy, Sell, and Trade sites that I use. Some items are frequently listed for free! It will be worth your time to look up some of these sites. Your free “prize” may be waiting for you!

Another site I visit frequently is Listia. I have a lot of fun here! This is a site where you can sell your items or buy items with your points at sometimes very steep discounts. I have listed my homemade soaps and lotions on Listia and have earned ALOT of points with them! I use those points and bid on books, essential oils, and toys for my grandchildren. Very worth it for you to take a look at this site to save some big bucks!

There are, of course, some items in the store I will not skimp on. Eggs, for example. If I am not raising my own chickens for eggs and I have to buy eggs at the store, I only buy cage free, organic eggs (can you say pricey!) Not cheap. Not frugal, but something I insist on buying, even at a higher price and then I will be able to skimp in another area. Another product I buy and do not skimp on are the essential oils I use for my homemade products. I buy only organic, therapeutic grade essential oils. Once again, not cheap, but you only need a very small amount for them to work.

Favorite coupon finding sites

Some of the sites I go to  find my coupons are The Krazy Coupon Lady, Coupons.com, and Passion For Savings

There are a multitude of ways I save my family money and will write several separate posts on some of my homemade, natural and CHEAP creations. I make my own soap, including body soap, laundry soap, and dishwashing soap. I make my own face and hand cream also. You can frugally make your own smoothies and specialty coffee drinks also. I scour the Internet, find trusted sites and authors, get the recipe and work with that recipe until it soot’s my needs and preference. I also clip coupons, use coupons and recommend coupons to save money. I love the Ibotta app more than anything to save me money on my shopping trips. There are so many websites on the Internet and so many apps to use to save money and earn cash back, all you have to do is find the one that works best for you.

I hang my laundry outside on nice days, produce my own organic produce in my garden, and can, dehydrate and freeze that produce to last all winter. For my compost I use to raise chickens for chicken manure to add to my compost and I had a worm farm. These things will begin again and I will share on future posts once we are settled on our new property. Making compost is the easiest organic, healthy way to keep a healthy, organic vegetable garden.

In my previous post “Why Add Affiliates To Your Blog For Income” I discuss ways I earn added income through my blog and ways to save money while shopping. Like I said. I am cheap. If I can save money, I WILL find a way to do it. If you follow me on Pinterest, you will see many ways I am able to stay cheap and frugal. There are so many wonderful ideas out there by so many wonderful authors with just a click of the mouse, you to can live a cheap and frugal life and remain happy!

This is not a post about living a debt free life or how to become debt free. It is a post stating that there are many ways you can cut your spending by being creative, making your own products and doing simple things liked building your own organic garden for fresh wholesome produce. If you have priced the organic and natural products online, such as face cream and body lotion, then you know how super expensive they can be. Now, you can make your own at less than half the cost!  If you take 10 to 15 minutes each morning or evening searching the Internet, you too can live a cheap, frugal life and be very happy while doing it. I am quite sure you will see several more blog posts on my site about cheap and frugal living, since it is a topic I love and what I live by.

Why Add  Affiliates To Your Blog For Income?

Disclosure: I am compensated for purchases/sign-ups made via the referral links in this post. See Disclosures

If you have a blog, why not produce a nice income from it with affiliates and referrals? That is the statement I have read over and over again on the multiple blog sites I visit daily. When I first decided to start a blog, making an income from it wasn’t something I had considered. I just wanted to give information to my followers about building a homestead and creating a healthy organic environment while living a sustainable life.

I began to look more closely at some of my favorite blogger’s websites and sure enough there was one word that kept popping up over and over again…Affiliates. I had no idea what an “affiliate” was and began an intense Internet search related to adding affiliates to your blog. Wow! Who knew that you can write a blog on topics you love and actually make a few bucks doing so! So here is my disclaimer (which I learned you had to place if you are advertising or placing affiliates on your website) This site may contain affiliate links, please see my Disclosure and Policy page for further information.

There are numerous sites that will pay you to refer their site to their readers and will provide you with a referral link that is uniquely yours. This method can increase your income and you have to do nothing except add a link to your social media site or add to your blog post! The more I continue my search about affiliates the more I will recommend to my readers for trusted brands that I use and know work well for me (below are just a few affiliates and referral links that I trust)

There are many different ways to promote your website and earn an income.

1.Place Banner Ads on your Blog sidebar. Choose the most colorful and eye catching banner you can find to draw attention to your visitors.

2. You can write product reviews on your blog. Find a favorite product, contact the company and let them know you love their product, that you have a blog and that you would like to promote that product. Occasionally the company will give you the product free and sometimes they will even pay you for the product review.

3. You can place a “Favorite Affiliate” or” Favorite Resources” site on your Blog like I have above and add all your affiliate links under that to direct your viewers to products you trust.

4. Add text links to your blog from your trusted affiliate sites so that when the viewer clicks on the link and purchases a product, you will earn a small commission with each click.

5. Choose affiliates and banner ads that work well with your niche and with the visitors coming to your site. If your niche and most blogs are about “How to be a Dog Handler” and your banner ads are for chicken coops and electronics, then it is most likely your visitors will not be clicking on any links.

The next step for me, after actually finding out what affiliates meant, was to go to the websites of only products I trust to see if they had affiliate programs. Low and behold, most of them did!. So as I continue to build this website you will see at the top of my page some trusted affiliate links on products I trust and products I have no problem letting my followers know about. Some of the links are also for referrals to sites I use everyday and have actually did extremely well at. I will list them below and you can check them out yourself to see if they are for you or not.

  1. Swagbucks This is a very popular site that you should at least visit and check out. I use Swagbucks Every Single Day! I cannot count how many Amazon or Walmart gift cards I have earned on this site and just for doing searches. You can also shop, watch videos and listen to music and earn points to redeem for a lot of different gift cards. I love this site. This is my favorite site by far and I will gladly ask my followers to check it out.
  2. Bluehost-and WordPress- If you are thinking about starting a blog, then you should use Bluehost to host your website. The navigation is easy to use and yes, it is probably the best priced out there! Not only that, there affiliate program pays you very well when some clicks on your referral link and joins the program. You do not have to do anything except add the referral link to your blog and Bluehost does the rest.
  3. Ibotta– This is an App that I use constantly and have saved a lot of money with while I do my shopping. This is another tried, tested and true product that I can comfortably endorse. And they are out of Colorado, which, of course, is a plus in my book! This app is so easy to use, that even I can do it. The savings you get goes directly into your paypal or Vimo account to use as you wish. It works. I love it! The referral payout is about $5 for each referral that clicks your link, which is small, but does add up quickly. I would use this app even if it didn’t pay for referrals. It saves me a lot of money and is easy to use. Works for me!
  4. Ebates– Who does not like Ebates! Shop, Save and also earn! Ebates income can really add up if you place a referral link on your blog. Who doesn’t like cash back on items you purchase? I love this site. It is a fun site, pays you cash back and they have TONS of stores you can shop at! What’s not to like. Another affiliate that is very easy to use and they do all the work for you. All you have to do is spend the money you earn from them!
  5. ShareASale – This is the go to site for signing up with affiliate links from brands you trust. It has a list of numerous merchants that you can choose, one click sign up and done! Probably one of the best affiliate sites out there!
  6. Epantry–  ( Now called Grove.co)Top site for selling all natural, organic products for all your household needs, such as cleaning supplies, hair care, lotions, dish detergents. Go green and shop at Epantry!(Grove.co) When you refer a friend and they sign up you get $10 and your friend gets $10!
  7. Last but not least…drum roll please…Amazon! I LIVE on Amazon. It is just an added bonus for me that it has an amazing affiliate program to go along with it. As you can see at the top of my website I have dedicated a whole area just for Amazon. If you are going to add any affiliate links to your blog..add this one! I can click on the products I want my followers to try. I pick brands, books and products I trust, know work and that I love. The whole page is dedicated to the products I would like my followers to learn about, educate themselves about and if they click the link I have provided for them and buy the product then I get a small percentage of the sale. Easy! Simple! They do all the work for you! And the best part is, while I shop on Amazon, I am earning Swagbucks points!

Now, as you begin building your website and creating wonderful topics for your followers, YES, you CAN also make an incoming doing so! Do your research on referral programs and affiliates very carefully and only offer your followers brands and products that work for you and that you trust. As I continue building my blog topics I will also be adding more affiliates and referrals to my site that I want my followers to check out or try. Have fun with it and make $$$ while doing so!
